<description>The concept of vision in visual art practice is continually overlooked and is consequently no longer questioned. Vision is a by-product of visual art, instead of being an integral feature in the creative process. In an endeavour to identify and question the design process in our individual practice, we have defined vision as follows: looking for, looking at and seeing those activities that manifest themselves in the design process through researching, reading/observing and understanding. The concept of light is interwoven with the concept of vision. In order to provide a multidimensional understanding of both of these notions, the project references material from diverse fields of study. From sciences to arts, from philosophy to photography, light and its complexity have frequently been explored through experimentation, and this process has been well-documented. Light enslaved for technical purposes, light as a goal in philosophical journeys, light as an artistic medium... light escapes a definitive definition and remains in nature, eminently intangible and poetically elusive. Envisaging a preferred future for Graphic Design, Temporary Light proposes an exploration of the concept of vision and the concept of light in this particular context.
In an intentional reference to Les Lumières and to the Platonic cavern, Temporary Light brings together intellect and sensations, culture and senses in an experimental investigation.

We looked at various conceptual movie makers including John Whitney, Alexander Hammid, Zdenek Pešánek and Len Lye. After a lengthy discussion, we concluded that a simpler and lower tech way of generating the pictures was the most appropriate.

As a memento we produced a series of booklets to be handout during the lecture. They all have a slightly different content. The pages of the booklet contains photocopies from our research.

<description>We had been asked to engage with the given text and over a period of two weeks produce a publication in which we could demonstrate our ability and understanding of the formal structures in the context of typographic detailing. The text for this brief was taken from the first chapter of ‘Hart’s Rules - for Compositors and Readers’ which is an authoritative reference book and style guide published in England. It is a highly academic piece of writing set and designed with a scholarly audience in mind.

For the inspiration I decided to look up old letterpress dictionaries and other printed matter in which space was scarce and the careful consideration of all the aspects of the design was paramount. Very soon I realised that browsing only in the past would be severely inadequate and limiting for my design. I therefore decided I had to explore the typographic development of bauhaus, post-modernism and Swiss design.

<description>The objective of this project was to communicate more clearly with the public.
I made the decision that a curatorial event combined with a suite of printed matter was
the most appropriate solution. I started my research by contacting Judy Lindsey, a curator of the study collection. She helped me to understand the structure of the museum and pinpoint the problems and promotional requirements of the display space. After our discussion we arranged the time slot for the curatorial event and I started working on organising the display in one of the windows allocated to the museum, focussing for the initial designs on the four sections of the collection: ceramics, textiles, theatre design
and fine arts.
